Happy first birthday, sweet baby Arlo

Last night as I fed Arlo his evening bottle, we sat snuggled together in his rocking chair as we always do before he goes down for the night.  When he was finished eating, I moved him so he was laying against my chest with his head on my shoulder.  It was dark in the room, but his heavy breathing and limp body let me know he was asleep.  I started thinking about how the next day he would be one year old.  One year since our little man came rushing our lives and changed everything.  One year of the biggest ups, the lowest lows, tears and frustrations, smiles and hugs, and a complete 180 degree spin of the world as we knew it.  The tears fell softly at first but before I knew it was fighting back full blown sobs as I was overcome with emotion of the memories.  From flashbacks of labor, to bringing him home from the birthing center, the long nights with a tiny new baby who we were just starting to get to know, the rigorous pumping schedule I adhered myself to when breastfeeding didn't go as planned, the new parent anxiety, and memories of feeling like we eventually got it together and were doing a pretty good job as parents flooded my mind as we sat there together on the eve of his first birthday.  When I finally got the courage to stand up and lay my sweet infant in his crib for the night, I kissed him several times and put him gently in his bed, knowing that the next time I would hold him he would be a whole year old, and no longer considered a baby by technical standards - but strong and growing toddler.

A friend of mine once told me that babies choose their parents.  Between my terrible singing voice that I frequently force upon him, to the silly dances I do in the kitchen as I prepare his meals, to the times where I am too exhausted to hop out of bed during the night when starts crying, hoping he will soothe himself back to sleep, I have often wondered why in the world any baby would choose me as their mom.  But he must have somehow known how my heart would overflow with love, my arms would always be there to rock him to sleep, and my lips would kiss him a hundred times a day.  Sweet baby Arlo, you are the sweetest, silliest, and most energetic boy we have ever known. Words cannot express the love your Dad and I have for you, and we are so very lucky to call you our son.

Happy birthday little man.

DIY holiday card display

I have been wanting to make a card display for some time now. We have the perfect spot to hang it in our dining room - a large (nearly) empty wall just waiting for my next Pinterest craft. I had been keeping my eye out for a large (think poster sized) picture frame that I had intended to refinish and then string twine behind to hang cards and photos from. However, I recently came across this tutorial for a card display, and knew it was exactly what I wanted. And the best part - I didn't have to keep hunting for a frame that was taking me so long to find!

I made the display at the beginning of December, and it is currently holding our recently received holiday cards. After the new year (ok, let's keep it real, it will be more like February - I like to leave our cards up for a while!) I will replace them with photos, birthday cards, postcards, and whatever else comes our way throughout the year.

The card display was pretty easy to make, the hardest part was stapling the chicken wire to the back of the frame. I had a hard time getting it to lay completely flat, so it turned out a bit wavy. Not a big deal and probably noticeable only to me. I like how adding in simple nature-inspired elements can help keep the card display appropriate for the season. I opted not to hang a wreath, and instead added in a couple of sprigs of pine branches bundled with twigs and a pine cone. I did make a couple of changes from the original plans - our display is a couple of inches smaller, and used wood that was a bit thinner (depth wise) than they called for.

I really love how it turned out.  Within days of finishing it the Christmas cards started to roll in, and I found myself running excitedly to the mailbox everyday hoping for another card to add to the display. This is pretty much my favorite time of the year to get the mail - I absolutely love Christmas cards of all kinds!

bonus shot of my homemade wine rack (circa 2013) in the background!
side note - if you sent us a card that you don't see on display, not to fear!  I received a few cards within the last couple of days, but had already taken the photos for this post.  If you sent us a card - I can assure you it is hanging on the wall!

We will be spending the next few days with my parents and sister, eating lots of home cooked food, watching Christmas movies, soaking up lots of Arlo snuggles, and no doubt spending entire days in our PJ's ;)

I hope your Christmas is filled with love, warmth, happiness, and the magic that this time of the year brings.

merry Christmas and a happy New Year from the B's!!

Holiday Crochet Corks

It started with pinterest.  it almost always does.

One night, here I am, just scrolling through my feed, and there they are.  The most adorable crocheted Christmas trees I have ever seen.  Okay, so maybe they are the only crochet Christmas trees I have ever seen, but still.  Immediately, I add it to my "hooked" board where the other hundreds of crocheted items live that I someday plan hope to make.

Except these I actually do.  A few days ago I remember said trees and think "hey!  I've got some yarn (just a little - ha) and some leftover wine corks.  Let's make this happen!"

Little did I know that these little trees would be the inspiration for my next set of crochet patterns.  It started with a gnome (to live in the little forest of course) and then kind of snowballed out of control.  Soon my desk was covered with yarn of all colors, wine and champagne corks, and scratch paper where I was furiously scribbling notes about my next idea.  The next thing I knew the windowsill above my workstation contained a gnome, Santa, elf, snowman, and several trees.
did you notice my use of the word snowball?  and you thought I wasn't one with the puns...

So for you today, I am sharing all the patterns - for free!  I know, I know.  I love free stuff too.  And I love crochet.  And I love corks.  And I love miniature gnomes and such.  So basically I have combined some of my favorite things into one blog post and I am gifting it to you.  Because Christmas.

Simply click on the link below the photo to open up the pdf pattern - no downloading required.  Feel free to share with friends and be sure and send me a photo if you make them!

meeting Santa

Arlo and Lyra got to meet Santa for the first time today.  I predicted there would be some tears, as not very many (nearly) one year olds will happily sit on a strange man's lap, especially one who is wearing a big red suit and has a face covered in puffy, white hair!  Overall I think they did pretty well for their first visit.  I know that Arlo asked Santa for his own car and I am pretty sure I heard Lyra whisper to him that she wants 17 more dogs.  Here are a few pictures of the kiddos meeting Santa:

And Lucy even got to meet Santa too!  She asked for a big rawhide.  And for the cats to go away.  But you didn't hear that from me  ;)

Holiday Photos 2014

While I can take credit for these photos, I can't claim that this was my original idea.  I saw the idea for this photo long before Arlo was even conceived, and tucked away the idea (via Pinterest) knowing all along it would someday be one of our holiday card photos.  Turns out, this year Arlo is the perfect age to make it happen!  The little tree came from Lowes and is now a little tabletop tree in our living room, and the cozy coupe car was stolen borrowed from the daycare down the street.  Erik helped me take these photos by entertaining Arlo with silly faces and dances, and was right outside the frame to catch him in case he started to drive away  ;)

Happy holidays from the B's!!

Currently.

I love this idea that mama R introduced me to a while back.  I am going to try and write one of these each month - it's like a quick peek into our lives in a single blog post.  Here is what is currently going on with the B's...

Reading:   Pretty much just kids books these days.  We read Arlo a bedtime store every night while we feed him his bottle.  I recently came across a copy of my favorite childhood book, Corduroy, at the local thrift store.  The first night we read it to Arlo, Erik and I looked at each other at the end of the story with tears in our eyes.  Such a sweet book about a little bear who finally gets a home.  We are also very into Winnie the Pooh these days.  Erik does a fantastic Eeyore voice which is pretty much my favorite part of reading the book.

Making:  Last month we made a thankful board that hangs in our kitchen.  My most recent project is a display to hold our holiday cards.  I will be sharing that project with y'all soon!  I have also made Arlo several bandana drool bibs (similar to the one seen here) because ever since his molars started to come in, he has been a drool factory.  They are so much cuter than a regular bib, and now he doesn't have to go around all day looking like he is about to eat lunch!

Eating:  a quinoa + butternut squash + kale recipe my friend introduced me to at a potluck a few weeks ago.  I am pretty sure I could eat it everyday...  Recipe coming soon!  Also these Uttapams I found at Trader Joes a while back.  I am all about the healthy, home-cooked food, but I am also a real human and sometimes dinner is something from the freezer that doesn't require any prep or much clean-up.  These Indian flatbreads are vegan, gluten-free, tasty, and inexpensive!  They are my go-to right now when I just can't get myself to put together a big meal.

Feeling:  well-rested because our little teething monster has returned (fingers crossed) to sleeping through the night, and has done so several nights in a row now.  cheery from the Christmas music I have playing on Pandora right now.  happy that I have the day off with nothing planned except a little laundry and cooking up a big batch of potato soup later this afternoon!

Listening:  I may be a little late to the party - but I have recently fell in love with that song "All About that Bass."  Like, I just wanna dance around our living room shaking my booty singing it loudly when I hear it.  Side note - I have realized that while Arlo is easily soothed by me singing "The Wheels on the Bus" he is also just as easily soothed as me singing Meghan Trainor's latest hit.  So, you know, that's been my song of choice when Mr. Fussypants starts asking for a song...

Wearing:  my new teal leggings, infinity scarves, boots and legwarmers, wool socks, and the crochet ear-warmers are back - yay!

Watching:  Sons of Anarchy (such a violent show which is totally not me - but oh so good anyway), and to balance out the sex, drugs, death, and destruction of SOA, I watch an occasional episode of The Carrie Diaries.  This show is directed at teenagers I am quite sure, but the young girl in me enjoys it as a guilty pleasure!!

Plotting:  Arlo's first birthday party!  Pinterest will actually be planning this entire party for me  ;)

Loving:  dark chocolate, Christmas music, and this new Soothing Touch massage oil I happened upon at the local co-op recently.  I love this stuff so much I have been adding a few drops to the water solution I use for our cloth wipes.  It is good for Arlo's skin and smells so nice at the same time!

thankful chalkboard

On the first day of November this year, we started a thankful board as a reminder of all the things that we are thankful for as a family (and there are a lot!)  Erik and I took turns adding a flag to the twine I strung across our kitchen chalkboard, adding one here and there as the ideas came to us.  On the last day of the month, the last flag was added.  It is a cute daily reminder to smile more and complain less, as there is a lot in our lives that we are lucky to have.

In no particular order of importance, here are a few of my favorite flags:

Last week I made another holiday craft, this time with Christmas in mind.  It turned out great - photos of that project to come soon!

Arlo: 11 months old

Happy eleven months old, little man!

Sleeping:  Well.... sleep has been kinda rough around here lately.  He has spent this entire month dealing with the arrival with his first set of molars, and they have not been easy.  They seem to bother him mostly at night, and he wakes up at least once, sometimes twice, nearly every night.  The past few weeks have been a flashback to the newborn days when getting up several times per night was the norm.  Standing in his room at 3am, trying to soothe him back to sleep with the ergo/singing/humming/swaying I have recently been wondering how I functioned on so little sleep when Arlo was brand new.  The human body is an amazing thing!

Fortunately, both teeth have surfaced, and while they still have a long ways to go, he seems to be doing better both during the day and at night.  Last night he actually slept straight though until 6:30am, and we all got a good nights sleep.  He is still going to bed around 8pm and waking up around 6am, later if we are up for any length of time during the night.  Naps are still morning and afternoon, and about 1 1/2 hours in length each.

Eating:  Big changes in the eating department!  Somewhere around the beginning of the month, I had a day where I had forgotten to defrost some frozen food cubes for Arlo's lunch.  I decided to try and make a meal out of finger foods, and he did so well with it I did the same thing again at dinner.  Within just a few days, Arlo was eating all finger foods and started to completely reject all "baby foods."  I love that he can now feed himself so well, and seems to eat a lot of food this way, but it also makes going out to eat a bit of a challenge.  He isn't quite ready to share the meals we would order at a restaurant, and I haven't really found a good well-rounded meal to pack for Arlo that transports easily for on the go.  Occasionally I can get him to eat a baby food pouch while we are out, but sometimes his meals end up being (the health food version of) cheerios and some thawed frozen veggies.  Also, I used to sneak in things like flax oil, tahini, and quinoa into his baby food blends, and now I am unsure of how to get him to eat things that he can't pick up himself!

We have made some good progress in the sippy cup department, and while he is not 100% with it, he now knows that it needs to be tilted up for the water to flow.  He does okay with straws but is more likely to spit out whatever he is drinking so we have mostly been using regular sippys.

Since we are suddenly unable to order anymore of the beloved Hipp formula that Arlo has done so well on for the past six months or so, we have decided to transition him to goats milk for the next month.  I have been doing a lot of research on infant nutrition and the necessity of a dairy-based milk as he enters into his second year.  I plan to write a more detailed post on it later on, but for now it's going to be goats milk and then a slow transition to plant-based milks after his first birthday.  He is still taking 4 bottles and eating three meals per day.

New foods this month:  papaya, blackberries, clementines, Brussels sprouts, sunflower butter (the one thing he will still eat from a spoon!) and Field Roast on Thanksgiving - and he loved it!

Weight and Length:  No official measurements, but if I had to guess I would say 20+ lbs for his weight, and not a clue for his length.  Tall and thin, but he feels heavier than he looks.  We will have the true numbers next month at his one year check-up.

Wearing:  Not much change from last month.  Onesies and pants are 12 month, pajamas are 12-18 months.  We are still cloth diapering, but around nine months old went back to one disposable diaper at night.  Arlo was dealing with an on and off rash and after we went to disposables at night it has been almost nonexistent.  I think his sensitive skin needs a break from the cloth at night, and the disposables seem to keep him a lot drier.  Still loving the cloth diapers, and haven't quite given up on that post I started writing months and months ago about the details of our CDing.  Someday, I will take it from draft to published.  It might be after Arlo is potty-trained, but it will happen eventually.

Likes and dislikes:
Likes: same as last month, and two of his favorite things continue to be the washer and dryer.  This works out to my advantage when it comes time to do laundry.  Both of our units are front-loaders, which means I can leave the doors open and Arlo is easily entertained by looking into them and banging on the doors and inside the drums, while I fold and put away the clothes.  If I have a load that needs to go from washer to dryer, I leave the washer open and Arlo will pull out nearly everything inside and throw it on the floor, and then I will put it in the dryer.  This only becomes a problem when I am trying to load stuff in the washer and he is trying to pull it out as fast as I am trying to put it in!

Dislikes:  Still the vacuum cleaners, having his face washed, and sitting down in the bathtub.  A few weeks ago we stopped using the baby bath and started putting him in the big bathtub.  I thought it would be easier but he is obsessed with trying to stand up, turn on the faucets, pull the plug from the drain, and do anything but sit still and play with his bath toys.  I should add under his "likes" that he is fascinated with the bathtub drain and his favorite thing is watching the water leave the tub and trying to stick his hand down to play with it.

New milestones and developments:

Lots to mention here!  Believe it or not, up until about a month ago Arlo was still primarily moving around via his "army crawl," only getting up onto hands and knees for short periods.  I was quite sure he was going to stick with that technique until he progressed to walking.  Almost overnight though, he started to crawl almost entirely on hands and knees, and instantly became a super-speedy crawler.  He hasn't army crawled since, and is now getting close to being able to stand up on his own.  He pulls up on everything and will hold on one-handed for balance.  He can cruise in a standing position from one piece of furniture to another, as long as he can always hold onto something.  I think that standing independently is in his near future, and walking probably won't be far behind!

Last month he had started to wave and clap, and now he knows to wave when someone is leaving and will often do it without being prompted.  He knows what "hi" and "bye" mean, and when I get home from work he excitedly crawls towards me, stopping to kneel and furiously wave at me when he sees me, ha!  If we clap he will clap along with us.  He is also finding ways to ask for "more" if he wants something.  Erik started playing a game with Arlo where they both spin around and around until they are dizzy.  When Erik stops, Arlo will laugh and then shake his head back and forth until Erik starts spinning again.  Arlo also loves to be upside down, and will throw his head backwards to get you to hold him that way.  Silly boy!

Arlo will also give kisses when asked, and watch out, they are big, wet, open-mouthed, drooly baby kisses!  I always thank him though as he is just trying to be sweet.  Recently we have been working on pointing to objects in books, and there is one in particular we have been quite successful with.  It is a book with Sophie the Giraffe, and even though she is on the same spot on every page, when you ask him "Where is Sophie?" he knows to point to her, and will do it most of the time.  I am so excited we are entering into this fun and interactive phase.

Perhaps the most exciting thing of the last month is we have an "official" first word.  Ok, we have two.  But I am not counting the first one.  We were in D.C. for Thanksgiving, and headed out the door for a play while Arlo stayed with Papa.  We were all waving and saying "bye" to Arlo, and he waved back and said "baa!"  Now, this might not sound like an official "bye" but to all of us it was pretty obvious he was trying to mimic what we were saying.  However, a couple of days later, he looked straight at Erik and said "Da Da!"  I thought it was just a random event, but then he did it several more times.  So we will be counting "Da Da" as his first word (sorry Arlo, I just don't want your first word to be "bye!")  Since then I have been questioning all these times he has said "ma ma ma ma ma ma" because now he seems to do it when he gets upset and I am not with him, almost like he is calling for me.  Meanwhile, Erik is still smiling about the fact that his sons first word was Da da.  Ha!

Our last new development is something I already briefly mentioned - all those teeth!  His two new molars bring us to a total of 10 teeth, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has 12 shortly after his first birthday.  Whenever we are out and Arlo smiles at someone, their first comment is "look at all those teeth!!"  Someone recently told me that she didn't expect a baby his size to have so many.  Somewhere around nine months I bought a baby sized toothbrush, and started to brush all those pearly whites.  In the beginning he was confused and was more interested in trying to hold and chew on it, but now he opens right up when he sees me coming with the toothbrush (this works best if I am holding him and facing the mirror so he can watch) and will let me brush his teeth for a good 30 seconds or so.  We are trying to brush twice daily, with just plain water for now.  I am still hunting for a natural toothpaste with ingredients that I approve of.

This is my last update of Arlo as an infant.  He will soon be considered a toddler, but I am pretty sure I will always think of him as my baby.  After his 12 month update, I think I will probably start posting these every three months instead of every month.  I would like to have more time to write about other things, mostly still kid-related.  I do plan to keep taking monthly pictures (although not of him laying next to a calender - those are becoming nearly impossible!!)

We love you so much, baby Arlo.  Keep growing, changing, and becoming the sweet little boy you are already showing us that you are.  Next update - the big ONE year!!  Stay tuned!

P.S.  Special thanks to my Mom (Grandma Josie) who provided us with the calender I have used for every single monthly photo, and to Erik's Mom (Memere Jill) who gave Arlo this adorable fox shirt.  Arlo is one lucky kid!!
