Black Bean, Sweet Potato, and Quinoa Salad

With Halloween just three days away, and four potlucks to attend within the span of eight days, I had been looking for a quick and easy recipe that would be easy enough to feed to a crowd, and at the same time offer up some kind of Halloween theme.  Sweet potatoes and black beans immediately came to mind as my orange and black ingredients, and are the main players in this dish.  Sweet potato pairs well with so many flavors, but there is something about combining it with a hint of lime that really allows the taste to shine through.  Brown rice syrup adds just a touch of sweetness and the hearty black beans give this salad the protein power to stick with you through all the pumpkin carving, hay rides, and corn maze exploring that this time of the year brings.  This recipe can be doubled to feed a crowd, and is easy to transport to a gathering with friends.  Can be served warm or is equally good cold the next day.  See the bottom of the recipe for optional add-in ideas!

Black Bean, Sweet Potato, and Quinoa Salad

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup uncooked quinoa
  • 2 small (or 1 large) sweet potatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans (or one can)
  • juice (+ zest) of one lime
  • 1/3 cup olive oil (plus a little more for roasting potatoes)
  • 1 TBSP brown rice syrup (or other sweetener of choice)
  • 1-2 TBSP chopped cilantro (can also use frozen cilantro cubes as a time saver)
  • salt & pepper to taste

 Directions:
  1.  preheat oven to 400 degrees.  peel and dice sweet potatoes into small 1/2" cubes.  place on baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, and roast for 20 minutes or until easily pierced with fork.  I always broil mine at the end for 2-3 minutes for a nice golden color.
  2. while potatoes are roasting, cook quinoa according to package instructions.  tip: since quinoa should be rinsed before cooking and will go into the pot "wet," use slightly less water than indicated on instructions.  this will help your quinoa cook up nice and fluffy!
  3. mix up dressing.  combine lime juice and zest, olive oil, brown rice syrup, cilantro, and salt & pepper.
  4. allow quinoa to sit and cool for a bit before mixing everything up.  when ready, in large bowl, combine fork fluffed quinoa, sweet potato pieces, and black beans.  pour dressing over top and mix gently.  taste and add additional salt and pepper as desired.
optional add-ins:  avocado, chopped red onion, green onions, bell peppers, or tomatoes.

Currently.

Recently my friend, mama R, wrote a similar post on her blog.  I hope she doesn't mind, I am stealing her idea to share a "currently" post of my own!

Reading:  I picked up a book at the thrift store a month or so ago, called "Through Thick or Thin" by Alison Pace.  I am only 20 or so pages in, and obviously it's not holding my attention well as I started it several weeks ago, but I am hoping to get back into it as our recently hectic schedule calms down a bit.  Over the summer, I started reading regularly and loved it.  An avid reader growing up, I lost interest in college when uninteresting required reading took over my life, and never really got back into it as an adult.  Here is hoping I make time to pick up a book from time to time, as I really do enjoy it.  Taking any and all book recommendations if you have them!
Oh, also always referencing Super Baby Food reading about new foods to introduce to Arlo, and soon will be picking back up Baby Signs as Arlo is starting to show the first signs of readiness to learn some simple sign language.  Stay tuned for his 10 month update for more on that!

Making:  For the first time post-baby, I have recently gotten back into crocheting.  And boy, does it feel good!  I forgot how therapeutic it is for me.  So far I have made a monster, Amish puzzle ball, and started an afghan (which I may or may not decide to finish.)  I have a whole bunch of hats on my list to make, and am looking forward to starting those soon!

crocheted monster (left)    puzzle ball (right) - comes apart into three pieces!

Eating:  Apples!  Seeduction bread from Whole Foods (BEST bread ever.)  I recently relaxed my gluten free rules and have found if I don't overdo it, my body is okay with a little gluten here and there.  Also eating Ethiopian food that my friend from work has introduced me to.  She bring me all kinds of amazing things and I can't believe I have lived my whole life without all this deliciousness.

Feeling:  GoodReally goodGreat.  Really, really great.  There were some tough times that followed Arlo's arrival earthside, and it took a while for me to get back to my usual self, but today I can honestly say I am feeling nothing less than happy, hopeful, and at peace.  It's a wonderful place to be!

Thinking about: The trip we took last weekend to the mountains - SO much fun.  Can't stop thinking about it because I want to go back!  Also looking forward to the holidays.  Halloween is next week, and after that it always seems that Thanksgiving sneaks up quickly, and then if you blink it's Christmas.  We always spend the holidays with our families so it's a very special time of the year for us!

The B family at Dupont Forest, pre-hike

Listening:  I go back and forth between two Pandora stations.  Bluegrass and Baby Einstein.  Arlo and I like to listen to music together while I make dinner and I find many songs written for kids to be fun and enjoyable.  Jewel has a version of "And the Green Grass Grew All Around" that I think is so pretty.  And any version of "You Are My Sunshine" will nearly bring me to tears.  So yea, bluegrass and baby tunes most of time in our house!

Wearing:  Um, scrubs all this week since I worked four days in a row - the most I have been away from Arlo so far!  Next week I will go back to my usual two day per week schedule, and that will be fine by me.  I don't know if this counts as a "wearable" item, but I have not gone anyplace recently without my new Okiedog messenger bag.  I bought it as a mini diaper bag but have been using it as my own handbag since it arrived a week ago.  I understand the necessity of the big ole' diaper bag, but I just couldn't get on board with toting around that giant thing everywhere.  So for the past 5 or 6 months, my "purse" has been a flimsy portable grocery bag, the kind that rolls up into a tight little ball when not in use.  I blame this for the loss of my car keys during our beach trip, so I decided to treat myself to a new bag that could replace my "shopping bag" purse.  It's a small bag but still large enough to fill with the essentials - my wallet, keys (on a key ring sewn into the purse!) phone, a single diaper, a few wipes in a baggie, one bottle, teething biscuits/puffs for Arlo, and a small teething toy or two.  If we are going out for a longer trip I also bring the regular diaper bag but keep it in the car.  Love my new bag!

Watching:  Shark Tank.  I don't understand my obcession with this show lately.  MSNBC has reruns that seem to be on every weeknight, always right after Arlo goes to bed for the night.  So lately I have found myself turning on channel 37 in hopes that an episode I haven't yet seen will be playing.  I love to see the creative and sometimes rediculous ideas people have come up with to pitch to the sharks.
We are also watching the most recent season of Californication on Netflix, and Arrested Development is another show we seem to have been working our way though for the last year or so.  It's our go-to show when we want something light and short to watch before bed.

Plotting:  Our Halloween costumes.  The purchase of a new convertible car seat for Arlo (sooooo much research!)

not his costume - just some adorable skeleton PJ's a friend gave us

Loving:  The cooler weather we have been having lately.  Extra blankets, hooded sweatshirts, fleece hats, hot tea, wool socks, and a baby in footed zip-up PJ's.  Apple cider and apple crisp from the apples we hand picked at the orchard last weekend.  The fact that my parents were here all week and spent every minute loving on Arlo, while I was able to pick up some extra hours at work.  Life  :)

A day in the life with a nine month old

I had planned on writing a "day in the life" post every three months or so, but somehow I skipped the six month mark. So, here is a typical day with Arlo at nine months old. I am working two days a week right now, so this is a day that I would spend at home with Arlo.

Monday, October 13, 2014

6:00 AM: most days you could almost set an alarm clock to this kid, and today was no exception. He literally started calling for us from his room at 6 o'clock on the dot. Erik gets up with Arlo, changes him, and gives him the first bottle of the day. This is our little agreement, Erik takes the early morning routine, but if Arlo wakes up in the middle of the night, then I am the one to get up with him. I think I have the sweet end of the deal on this one, as it's pretty rare for Arlo to not sleep through the night.  On the weekends, I get up early with Arlo and let Erik sleep in. Periodically, we both get up together, but our system of taking turns allows us to both feel well rested most days of the week.

6:45 AM: Erik brings Arlo upstairs and puts him in bed with me to wake me up. Half-asleep, I find myself suddenly covered in baby drool, and being whacked in the face with tiny hands. There is no going back to sleep after this!

7:00 AM: I take Lucy for a 30 minute walk while Erik has his breakfast and gets ready for work.  Arlo will usually play in his playroom during this time, or cruise around in his walker or doorway jumper.

7:30 AM: I am home and take over baby duty so Erik can finish getting ready for work. Arlo and I will hang out upstairs, and I start a load of his laundry at this time. As I am tidying upstairs and getting the laundry going, I am simultaneously chasing after Arlo, and keeping him from climbing on the bathtub, the washing machine, furniture in his room, and anything else he is trying to get into.

8:00 AM: Back downstairs now, I put Arlo in his highchair and either let him play with the bead maze I have suction cupped to his tray or give him a handful of puffs to occupy him while I make his breakfast, and a cup of decaf coffee for myself. I then feed him breakfast while I enjoy my coffee. Today his breakfast is blueberries, bananas, kale, and oatmeal cereal, as well as some leftover banana pieces that he will feed to himself.

8:30 AM: back upstairs to change Arlo, and clean him up after his messy breakfast. He crawls around a little bit while I do some more chores upstairs and chase after him at the same time.

9:00 AM: Time for his morning nap, so I put him in the ergo and he falls asleep within five minutes. After he has been asleep for a few, I put him in his crib and head downstairs.

9:15 AM: Time for me to have breakfast, today is simply toast with peanut butter and a glass of soymilk. After breakfast, I clean up the kitchen, make bottles for the day, and tidy up the downstairs. If there is time, I will also check email, and see what is happening in the world of social media.

10:10 AM: I hear the first noises coming through the baby monitor. I am still cleaning up the kitchen, and Arlo sounds happy, so I will let him play in his crib until I am done or he starts to sound upset, which ever comes first. Now that he can pull himself up in his crib, he is pretty content to hang out in there for a good 15 to 20 minutes after his nap, and play with his toys. He has also recently started to reach through the bars at the end of the crib, into the baskets which contain his cloth diapers.  One by one he picks them up and throws them on the floor.

10:25 AM: I am done in the kitchen so I had upstairs to get Arlo. He is starting to sound a little fussy at this time so I assume he has run out of diapers to throw (note to self: find new storage place for cloth diapers.)  I change him and get him dressed for the day. After his morning nap is usually the best time of the day to go out and run errands, and we try to be home in time for his second nap which occurs mid afternoon. (We try and get out nearly everyday, either to run errands, meet up with friends for lunch or a walk, or go to the library for story time.)  I let Arlo play with his toys we have in our bedroom while I get dressed and ready for the day. I throw the laundry in the dryer before we go downstairs.

10:50 AM: Arlo gets another bottle before we head out the door. Today is Monday, and the day that I do our weekly grocery shopping, so we are headed off to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods to buy food for the week.

11:00 AM: I wear Arlo in the ergo while I do the grocery shopping. I also make a quick stop at the thrift store since it is right next to Whole Foods.  I often walk away empty handed but today I find a cute blue and grey striped fleece that will fit Arlo this winter.  It costs just $1!

1:15 PM: I arrived home to a very excited dog, a dryer that has been beeping for at least an hour, and a baby who has decided he is done with his car seat. I let out Lucy and stick Arlo in the highchair with a teething biscuit and his sippy cup, which buys me about 15 minutes to finish unloading the car and putting away the groceries.

1:30 PM: I feed Arlo his lunch, which today is broccoli, tricolored lentils, and sweet potato. I premade this food yesterday, froze around 12 meals, and saved a few jars worth in the fridge that he could eat fresh. He also eats half of a kiwi for dessert. Normally I would sit and eat lunch at the table while I fed Arlo, but today I unintentionally snacked my way through lunch at whole foods. It wasn't my fault that they put out vegan sushi, garlic bread, and delicious tortilla chips as samples. I might have made two trips around the sample area. And then requested to sample the vegan gelato for dessert. Twice.  #noshame. Hey, we spend enough at whole foods each week that I think I can sneak in a free lunch once in a while ;)

2:00 PM: I clean up the lunch mess and then take Arlo upstairs to change his diaper and get him ready for his nap.

2:15 PM: I wear Arlo to sleep in the ergo, and then put him down in his crib. Now I can finally give attention to the still beeping dryer and fold the load of clothes that has been waiting for me.

This much laundry.  Three times a week.  And this is all for Arlo!
3:00 PM: As soon as I get downstairs and realize that I have a few minutes to sit down and take a little break, I hear Arlo waking up on the baby monitor. The last few days his afternoon nap has been less than an hour long, and I am wondering if this is our new normal. His naps used to be closer to 90 minutes, and I would use this afternoon break to have a little "me time" but with the shortened nap I find myself without much of that these days.

3:10 PM: Arlo crawls around upstairs while I stuff diapers and put away the clothes that I just folded.

3:40 PM: head downstairs to get Arlo a bottle, and then let him play on the floor while I lay next to him and relax for a little while.

4:30 PM: I text Erik to find out when he is going to be home for dinner. I hear Arlo crawl towards the front door so I walk over to see what he is getting into. I am shocked to see him climbing the stairs and already climbing onto the third stair. We recently installed a gate at the top of the stairs, but it looks like we are going to need one at the bottom as well!

4:45 PM: upstairs for a diaper change, and then I stick Arlo in the doorway jumper in the kitchen so I can cook dinner and not have to chase him around the house at the same time.  Tonight we are having vegetable curry over white jasmine rice. Yum!

5:45 PM: Erik arrives home from work just as I am finishing up dinner. Since our meal is spicy, we wont be able to share any with Arlo, but if we were having something plain he would eat some of what were eating. I defrosted some premade sweet potato last night and heat that up while I plate up dinner for Erik and I. I also mix in some rice cereal with Arlo's sweet potato to thicken it up a bit.

6:00  PM: We all sit together in the dining room and eat. I give Arlo a teething biscuit while I eat and then feed him his dinner when he is done with the biscuit. Arlo also taught himself to stand up in his highchair today so he attempts to do that several times as we are finishing dinner. Looks like I need to get a new high chair pad/safety strap in addition to the stair gate...

6:30 PM:  Erik and I clean up the kitchen together while Arlo sits in his high chair and bangs his sippy cup on the tray, finishes his teething biscuit, and babbles to Lucy who is laying close by, hoping he will drop something on the floor for her.

7:00 PM:  Before it started getting dark out so early, we would often take a family walk after we finished dinner and the kitchen got cleaned up.  It is already getting dark at this time though, and Erik and I are both feeling tired so we decide to make it a lazy evening and all lay together on the living room floor, classical music playing on Pandora.  Arlo, of course, seems to have acquired more energy as the day progressed (I think they should rename teething biscuits to "energy cakes") so we take turns chasing after the little man and returning him to the safety of the living room rug.  Tonight we make up a new game of playing catch with one of Arlo's toy balls while laying on our backs on the floor.  Mindless entertainment that we get more enjoyment out of than Arlo does watching our whole silly game!

7:45 PM:  This is usually the time where we start getting Arlo ready for bed.  Arlo typically gets a bath every other night, sometimes more often depending on how messy of an eater he decides to be that day, and tonight happens to be a bath night.  We have a loose schedule of taking turns giving Arlo his bath, and tonight Erik says he would like to take on the task.  I heat up the last bottle of the day (he gets a large one at bedtime - nearly 7 oz) and when I hear bath time coming to an end I head upstairs with the bottle.

8:00 PM:  Since Erik gave Arlo his bath I will be the one to feed him, we usually switch off so we both get to spend time with him before bed and Arlo doesn't get used to one parent always doing the same routine.  This is unless it happens to be a working day for me - then I always want to be the one to feed him and put him to bed since I have been away most of the day and miss him so much when I get home.  While I feed Arlo his bottle in the nursery rocker, Erik reads us a bedtime story - tonight we learn about "Lindy the Lobster," one of the many educational kids books that Papa bought for Arlo on our recent trip to the OBX.

8:20 PM:  Arlo falls asleep taking his bottle, and I let him sleep on my chest for 5-10 minutes, both to enjoy the peaceful baby cuddles and to make sure he is in a deep sleep before laying him down in his crib.

8:30 PM:  Now it's time for Erik and I to take our showers, finish laundry, tidy the living room, and any other chores we couldn't get done while Arlo was still up.

9:15 PM:  With the baby monitor nearby so we can hear Arlo if he wakes up, we finally are able to settle onto the couch together and watch a bit of TV before bed.  Sometimes we lay in bed and watch a TV show on DVD but tonight we find that Shark Tank is on and we decide to watch that.

10:00 PM: Time for bed, as our little six o'clock alarm is going to go off before we know it and it will be time to repeat the whole process one more time...

* please excuse typos, I dictated these events on my iPod so I could quickly document our day as it happened. I do my best to proofread, but I am sure a few mistakes will slip by!

Arlo Eats

Now that Arlo is well into eating solid foods, I thought I would share a little more detail about what he eats and how I prepare his meals.  I always knew I would be making his baby food at home, but had no idea how fun it would be to come up with new recipes and allow him to try new things.  It's no secret that food and nutrition are very important to me, so it shouldn't surprise you that I am pretty excited to be introducing our little guy to the wonderful world of fruits, veggies, grains, and beans.  I have loosely been following the advice of the "baby food bible" Super Baby Food, and have taken the bits and pieces I feel are appropriate for us and also added in a few of my own ideas.  The most helpful information I took from the book is the schedule of which foods are appropriate for baby at their current age.  Since I am no expert on the development of an infant's gastrointestinal tract, and I didn't want to upset his little tummy or increase his risk of a food reaction, I tried to not to introduce foods until the book said it was okay to do so.  So far he has not had any signs of allergy or sensitivity to anything he has tried, and fortunately eats pretty much everything I offer him.  Let's hope that this adventurous sense of eating continues into toddlerhood.  Toddlers like kale and quinoa, right?  ;)

Making the meals:

Each week I choose a new food or two to buy at the store, and if it requires cooking and freezing I try and do so as soon as I can to preserve the nutrients.  99% of what Arlo has eaten has been organic, and while I will surely relax this rule as time goes on, I feel at his young age it is absolutely essential for him to avoid unnecessary pesticides whenever possible.  In terms of how I make his meals each day, the food prep depends on what it is, and if he can eat it raw or if it needs to be cooked.  Breakfast typically consists of a mashed raw fruit mixed with oatmeal cereal, and lunch and dinners are usually cooked veggies mixed with rice cereal or other grains.

Example breakfasts:
  • fork mashed bananas + oatmeal
  • peaches + oatmeal
  • pears + applesauce + oatmeal
  • pureed blueberries + fork mashed bananas + oatmeal
  • banana pieces (finger foods)
  • kiwi pieces (too slippery for him to pick up, I feed him with a spoon)

Example lunch and dinners:
  • sweet potato + rice
  • peas + quinoa
  • squash + tahini+ rice
  • carrots + spinach + rice or quinoa
  • green beans + carrots + rice
  • kale + apples + mixed grain cereal (oats, barley, and spelt)

Raw foods:  This process is super simple and just requires having the right foods on hand!  This is how I typically make his breakfast, and involves either taking the fruit and fork mashing or blending lightly in the baby bullet, and then mixing in some store-bought or made at home baby cereal (we are doing mostly store-bought at this time because it is super convenient and fortified with DHA, choline, and probiotics.)  I mix in a little bit of hot water from the electric kettle to warm the meal a bit, and then stir it all together, adding more cereal or water until the right consistency is reached.  Arlo is doing well with thick foods that have small chunks now, but back when he started solids preferred a much smoother consistency.  Examples of some raw foods that Arlo is eating include: banana, pears, peaches, blueberries, spinach (although that requires blending), and avocado.

Cooked foods:  This method takes a bit longer to prepare initially but can be done in large batches, saving you time when making future meals.  As I mentioned before, I usually pick a new food or two each week and prep it that day if possible to preserve nutrients.  I will either bake, boil, or steam the veggie, and then process it in the vitamix.  I then freeze it in a 2 ounce cube that can easily be mixed with 2 ounces of cereal (or beans or cooked grains) or 2 ounces of another veggie for a complete 4 ounce meal.  The baby bullet I bought (new for $15 at a yard sale - score!) also came with three silicone freezer trays so I can make 18 cubes at a time.  Once the cubes are frozen I put them in a labeled freezer ziploc bag and store in my dedicated baby food freezer drawer.  I always save 2-3 meals worth of the veggie I just cooked and store it in glass jars in the fridge so Arlo can have several days in a row of the new food to monitor for a reaction.

When I am planning his meals for the next day, I will take out 2 or so frozen cubes of baby food and let them defrost overnight in glass jars, and by the time he is ready to eat they will be thawed and ready for cereal to be mixed in.  As it turns out, the cute tapered jars that Beech Nut baby foods come in fit the frozen cubes like they were meant for each other, and those small jars fit into our bottle warmer perfectly, allowing us to avoid the microwave or inconvenience of heating each meal in a pan on the stove.  So while the process might sound complicated, the time I spend to prepare each of his meals is perhaps 1-2 minutes at most.  I have several empty de-labeled jars (that I ate the contents of because Beech Nut doesn't make organics, whomp whomp) so I can store, heat, and serve his meals in glass.

1.)  fork mashed bananas + blended blueberries, ready for some oatmeal to be mixed in  2.) breakfast ready to eat  3.)  happy baby with full tummy  4.)  all gone!

A fun thing I have been doing lately is making two or three foods at one time, and freezing them layered together in the silicone molds.  This allows Arlo to have several foods at once, without having to preplan to defrost several foods at the same time, and try to figure out what things I have on hand that might mix well together.

green beans + carrots on the left and butternut squash on the right.  once defrosted just mix in some cereal/grains, heat, and serve!

Finger Foods:

this kid loves his puffs!

While we are still doing mostly mashed/blended foods for Arlo, he is also starting to get into finger foods as well.  He has been enjoying teething biscuits and puffs for a while now, but recently we also started to give him his first tastes of table food.  When we went out for my birthday two weeks ago, we tried an Ethiopian restaurant for the first time, and have Arlo a few pieces of the bread that comes with the meals, called Injera, and he absolutely loved it.  He also had a few bites of the non-spicy lentil dish and chickpea salad and liked those as well, although I did spoon feed him that as they are not really "finger foods."  This past week at dinner I let him feed himself some roasted sweet potato pieces I made, as well as some plain pasta noodles.  He did really well until he either got full or bored, as he decided to turn the potatoes into finger paints and smear them around his high chair tray.  It is pretty fun to sit down together at the table and eat the same foods, watching Arlo feed (and happily entertain) himself during dinner!

The plan (if there can be one with anything baby related) is to continue to introduce appropriate finger foods, but also keep on feeding him blended (and eventually more whole form) baby foods for as long as he will let me.  Many of the things he takes in "baby food" form wouldn't be easy (or safe) for him to feed himself right now, such as blueberries, kale, quinoa, and other small grains.  So I obviously want him to continue to eat those for nutritional reasons, but also so he develops a taste for these foods while he is young and will hopefully want to eat them as he grows up.

Going out to eat:

As mentioned before, I love making Arlo's meals at home, and this is what he is eating the vast majority of the time.  But when meeting friends at the local co-op, traveling, or just going out to dinner, the convenience of those store bought baby food pouches can't be beat.  Plus, they come in such amazing combinations of fruits, grains, and veggies that I have a hard time not eating them myself!  My biggest complaint about these pouches is the packaging.  Not only does it seem wasteful, but it's made of plastic, one of my least favorite materials.  So we try and limit the pouches to when we are out and about, and stick with the homemade stuff when at home.

"Sprout" brand - made just for Arlo aka Sprout?  ;)

Up until recently we have been feeding him by either squeezing the pouches onto a spoon bite by bite or using one of those screw-on style baby spoons that attach directly to the pouch.  However we recently decided to try and squirt it directly into Arlo's mouth right from the pouch.  Once he got a little taste of the food he closed his lips around the spout and sucked it down like it was a bottle!  We actually had to slow him down at one point because he had taken in around 1/3 of the pouch without even stopping.  He even held it himself for a bit and ate, although since we were out at a restaurant and didn't want baby food to squirt everywhere we helped him with most of it.

And an update on the sippy cup:

I started to let Arlo play with the sippy cup many months ago, probably when he was around 4 or 5 months old.  I thought that would help him learn to use one early, but in fact I think I might have taught him that it is not, in fact, a vessel from which to drink fluids, but a fun toy that makes lots of noise when you bang it against the high chair tray.  Oops.  We introduced a straw cup a few weeks ago and while he will sometimes drink from it without issue, he usually spits most of the water out and thinks its a fun game.  He is getting enough fluids between his bottles and solids though, so I am not too worried that he isn't a big fan of water yet.  I have no plans for diluted juice anytime soon, and I plan to hold off on any milks until he is around a year.  I am still researching our best options, but right now I am leaning towards giving him a combination of oat, almond, hemp, and rice milks.  We will choose options fortified with calcium so he will be getting at least as much as he would if we had him on a dairy-based milk.

Right now I think we are off to a great nutritional start and hope that our little man continues to be a good eater.  I am really excited about introducing him to more of the foods that we like to eat, and watching him grow into a more independent eater.  His favorite things right now are sweet potatoes, bananas (and all other sweet fruits), and surprisingly - kale!

Leaving you with one last picture, quite possibly my favorite one to date of him eating.  This is what it looks like when your baby can't decide between taking a nap and eating a teething biscuit....

Thrifty baby

It's been a long time since I shard a thrifty baby post!  We have scored some great stuff lately between Craigslist and yard sales.  Here is what we have found!

Inglesina Fast Table Travel High Chair
This is my best find in months.  The cover washed up to look brand spanking new, and I can't wait to take a trip so we can use it!  Ours is more of a burnt orange color (matches our car seat and my car)  Price new: $60  We paid: $7!

Plan Toys wooden drum set
Arlo won't be able to play with this for a while yet, but it was too good of a deal to pass up at a yard sale.  Price new: $54  We paid: $0.50 (yes 50 cents - which is basically free. looks new but didn't include the drumsticks so I will have to find those elsewhere)

Busy Zoo Activity Cube
Craigslist find, and while I paid more than I wanted to, I still feel like it was a fair price.  The newer version is called the "zany zoo" but has all the same exact activities as our older model called "busy zoo."  Price new: $60  We paid: $25

Munchkin White Metal Auto Close Baby Gate
Not the most exciting find, but probably the most needed right now!  We found this gate at a yard sale this past weekend and paid just $10.  Price new: $55.  Installed it immediately at the top of the stairs and I am sleeping so much better at night because of it  ;)

Kiddieland Ride on Push Car
Another craigslist find from the same sale as the travel high chair.  I had been looking for a wooden walker/push toy but couldn't pass this up for $4.  Price new is only $12, but Arlo loves sitting on it so much pressing the siren buttons and grabbing the wheel that it was well worth the money.  Still have my eye out for a wooden one though.

Clothes, clothes, and more clothes
The tubs pictured above are filled with clothes for the entire next year.  One is size 18 month and is filled with t-shirts, shorts, summer PJ's, bathing suits (somehow I accumulated nine suits, which means we will have to take a lot of trips to the beach!) and sandals.  The other large tub is size 24 months and includes jeans, long sleeve shirts, a brand new winter coat, winter PJ's, vests, and boots.  Arlo is pretty much set for all of 2015! The smaller tub has a few 3T things that I found recently at a sale and couldn't pass up.  I am picky about the condition of the clothes and only buy things in very good or like new condition.  Best part - I paid just $0.50 to $1 for each item!

What is the point of these thrifty baby posts?  Well, I would be lying if I didn't say I get all giddy and excited about scoring amazing deals on anything I possibly can, and often want to tell everyone I know about all the useful stuff I bought for next to nothing.  But the environmental benefits to buying secondhand rank just as high on my list of reasons, as do the cost benefit.  I want to prove it doesn't have to be expensive to raise kids, and truth be told, with the exception of the baby gate for safety reasons and the clothes for obvious reasons, the other items on this list are not absolute essentials, and never would have entered our home if we had to buy them new and pay full price.  Babies actually need very little, and Arlo is often more entertained by old rubber spatulas, empty cardboard boxes, and mismatched tupperware containers than he is by the "baby toys" he has.  I am thankful that he has everything that he needs and then some, and happy that something I love doing not only saves us money, but helps to save the planet at the same time.

Happy thrifting y'all  :)

Arlo: 9 months old

Arlo is officially nine months old, and I am officially on time for posting his monthly update - hooray for both!

Sleeping:  No big changes in the sleep department, which is a good thing!  Bedtime is around 8pm or a little after, and he sleeps until around 6am.  Naptimes are pretty regular, 9am and 1pm, lasting around 1 1/2 hours each.

Eating:  Ever since I started mixing in rice and oatmeal cereals with his fruits a veggies a month or so ago, Arlo has really started to eat like a champ.  He has two to three meals per day of solids (usually two but we are working on a more consistent three meal a day schedule) and will eat around four ounces each time.  Because he is eating more solid food throughout the day, his milk intake has really decreased.  I mentioned this to the pediatrician last week and she wasn't concerned at all, and said he is still getting enough liquid in his diet.  He typically takes four bottles throughout the day: upon waking, around noon, late afternoon, and again before bed.  The daytime bottles are around 4.5 ounces and the bedtime bottle is 6+ ounces.

In the solid food department Arlo has had:  sweet potato, avocado, green beans, peas, carrots, beets, blueberries, apples, rice, oatmeal, quinoa, squash, pears, bananas, spinach, mango, kiwi, grapes, red potato and probably a few other things but that's all I can think of right now.  We have tried some finger foods but the only thing we have had a lot of success with are puffs and teething biscuits, which are easy for him to pick up and eat on his own.  Soft, squishy things (bananas) are much more for to squeeze, smear around the high chair tray, and throw on the floor for Lucy.  Finger foods are a work in progress.  However, we have been able to successfully get him to drink from a straw several times now, and have just recently started to offer a straw sippy cup with meals instead of the kind that he has to tilt up to drink from.

looking a lot like his daddy here!

Weight and Length:  Arlo had his nine month check-up last week, and we now have his official numbers!  He is weighing in at 18 lbs even, which puts him in the 22nd percentile for weight.  Length is 27.75 inches which falls in the 28th percentile.  He may be a trim little guy, but he still has a big noggin' measuring in at 18.7 inches around - putting him into the 98th percentile for head circumference.  Whew!

Wearing:  no change from last month, 9-12 month size clothes.  As the weather has turned a bit cooler here in the south (yes that means 60-70's - keep laughing Michiganders) I have excitedly started dressing Arlo in the long sleeve onesies and long pants that I bought so long ago in anticipation of fall weather.  I have also decided that baby jeans are the cutest. thing. ever.

Likes and dislikes:
likes:  everything from last month, no big changes here.

dislikes:  teething, this is his biggest dislike in the universe (it also ranks very, very high on his parents list of dislikes in life.)  And according to the pediatrician, the molars are next up in the tooth department.  Yikes.  Arlo also dislikes getting his face washed after a meal, so maybe I should add "having a food covered face" to his list of likes...

standing - with a little help from mama  ;)

New milestones and developments:  the day before Arlo turned nine months, he *officially* pulled himself up to a standing position all by himself.  He was crawling around the kitchen and as soon as he noticed this dishwasher was open he headed right for it.  I was nearby and just let him do his thing, ready to catch him if he fell.  He pulled himself up to his knees on the open door, then grabbed the bottom dishrack and stood right up!  He is not yet skilled in gracefully returning to a sitting position so I am careful to be nearby when he pulls up so I can catch him before he topples over.

In the last few days Arlo has also started to crawl a little bit on hands and knees, instead of cruising around on his belly.  I wasn't sure he would actually ever get to this part, at least before walking, because he seemed so content to army crawl everywhere.  He hasn't sat up yet on his own without using either myself or a shelf/chair/other object to grab onto to help him on his knees to turn and sit down.  I know I have felt like this so many times in the past, but I really feel like each stage is more fun than the last, and look forward to watching him grow and change even more as time goes on.  Things we are looking forward to in the upcoming month:  Erik's birthday, a mountain trip, and Arlo's first Halloween!
